Update: How to Wash Your Brushes!

I know I talked about how to keep your brushes clean before, but I recently came across a video that I wanted to share with you. Whenever I washed my foundation brushes, even my eyeliner brushes, I would get really annoyed because it seemed like the makeup would never come off the brush. I tried different shampoos, but it didn’t help. I read somewhere that you can use olive oil, but that only made my brushes really greasy and even harder to rinse clean.

The video I am sharing with you combines two methods: soap and olive oil. The soap deep cleans while the olive oil conditions the bristles so that they don’t dry out! Such an amazing idea and the best part is that it works! I tried this method last week and I must say I actually enjoyed washing my brushes.

The video is by Michelle Phan, who is very well known on YouTube. I hope you enjoy this video and I hope you will try this awesome technique.

How to Take Care of Your Lips!

Dry, chapped and cracked lips can happen any time during the year, but for most people problematic lips occur often during the winter. Think about it…exposure to wind and the cold as well as heat can irritate the thin skin on your lips.

There are plenty of different methods as well as treatments to rid yourself of chapped lips, but you don’t need to spend a ton of money to get great results. In fact, you probably have all of these items sitting at home.

This post is going to be a first for Cherry Bomb Beauty, because I will not be the one telling you how to fix your lips. I found a great video on YouTube by Josh aka Petrilude and he will be the one explaining how to take care of your lips. I hope you enjoy the video!

How to Make Your Own Tinted Moisturizer

With all of the different cosmetic brands, formulas, shades and packaging buying makeup can be very overwhelming. I am here to help make at least one aspect of buying makeup a bit easier.

Tinted Moisturizer…you hear about it all the time, but is it really for you? Instead of spending time and money looking for a tinted moisturizer that could work for you I’ve discovered a simple, yet effective technique that can save you both your time and money.

All you need is your favorite facial moisturizer (or any moisturizer will do) and foundation. If you’re holding onto foundation that is a bit too dark for you, but are unsure what to use it for you may be in luck!

Simply mix your moisturizer with your foundation and voila! You now have tinted moisturizer! Really, it is that easy. Of course, the amount of moisturizer and foundation you combine is up to you. Naturally, you won’t want to use the same amount of moisturizer you typically use since you are adding foundation to it. If you are looking for just a hint of tint, then you will want to use more moisturizer than foundation. If you prefer more coverage, then add more foundation than moisturizer. Or you can just add equal parts moisturizer and equal parts foundation for that natural tinted glow.

When I mix my moisturizer with my foundation (or even two different shades of foundation to get that perfect shade) I prefer to use an artist spatula (a plastic or stainless steel one works just fine) to perfectly combine my concoction. You can use either the back of your hand (make sure your hands are clean) or you can use a clean artist palette to put your tinted moisturizer on.

If you try out this method, please leave a comment below. I would love to hear your thoughts!

How to Make Glitter Liner

Forget what you know about glitter, it isn’t for teeny boppers anymore! Glitter has made a comeback, but in a more mature way.

Urban Decay is making some serious cash with their Heavy Metal Glitter Liner selling for $18 per 0.25 oz bottle!

Even if you buy cheaper brands you can still run into the same problem; too much liquid and not enough glitter.

Here are step-by-step instructions in order to make your very own glitter liner!

You will need the following:

  • loose glitter (Make sure it is cosmetic glitter! You can buy these from any beauty store and it’s usually pretty cheap.)

  • Sally Girl Sparkle Effects Gel Adhesive for glitter (it is only 99 cents!)
  • Something to mix the glitter and glue on. You will want a clean/sanitary surface to do this. (I use an artist mixing palette, but you can use whatever you can find laying around the house as long as you clean it well.)

  • An eyeliner brush to apply the gel/glitter liner

How you make your glitter liner is entirely up to you. I recommend making it as you go though. It seems like it could be a pain, but it literally takes no time at all to make and there’s no way to preserve it for a decent length of time.

All you have to do is pour some glitter onto your mixing tray and add the gel adhesive. The amount and consistency is entirely up to you. I prefer to use less glitter and add as I mix; it’s easier to add glitter than to remove it! I also use the end of my brush (part without the hair) to mix the glitter and gel adhesive together.

If there’s any excess glitter liner left after I’ve applied my makeup I simply gather it onto my fingertips and rub it into my hair for some extra sparkle.

How to "Cancel Out" Your Natural Lip Color

Have you finally found that perfect shade of lipstick or lip gloss only to learn that it looks better in the bottle than it does on your lips?  This can be a huge pain not just for your lips, but your wallet as well.

If you add this quick step to your daily beauty routine you will witness your lipsticks and lip glosses transform before your eyes!

In order to “cancel out” your natural lip color you will need either foundation or a concealer.  I tend to prefer concealer because it is usually a bit lighter than foundation.

Simply dab a bit onto your finger and evenly coat your lips.  Keep doing this until the color of your lips have lightened quite drastically.

Your next step is to apply your favorite shade and enjoy your fresh new lips!

Not only does the concealer (or foundation) help to cancel out your lips, it also acts as a base which will prolong the color on your lips!

How to clean your makeup brushes

There are many different ways to go about cleaning your brushes, however some things should always remain the same:

  • Make sure you wash your brushes BEFORE using them for the first time.  You want to remove any dust and/or debris that was created when they were made, packaged, and/or waiting to be bought at the store.
  • ALWAYS wash your brushes in lukewarm water…you never want the hair bundle in extreme hot or cold water.
  • ALWAYS hold your brush straight up and down with the hair bundle pointing downwards.  Also, try to get just the hair bundle wet.  If you get water inside of the ferrule it may cause damage to your brush (such as loosening up the ferrule from the handle and/or the hair bundle).
  • ALWAYS lay your brushes flat to dry.

Here is a picture that explains the anatomy of a brush:

As far as how often should you clean your brushes….well that part is basically up to you.  Brushes are expensive because they are built to last; if you take proper care of your brushes then they could last you for years and years to come!

There are two different types of cleaning when it comes to brushes:

Spot Cleaning: You can use a brush cleanser, like MAC’s, or you can even use wipes, like baby wipes or the wipes you use to remove your makeup.  I use both of these methods; however when I use the MAC brush cleanser I like to get some on a face cloth and clean my brush by rubbing it onto the cloth.  Whether you’re using a brush cleanser or wipes you want to gently massage the hair bundle in a circular motion onto the wipe/cloth until you no longer see product coming off of the brush.  Spot cleaning can be done as often as after every makeup application, a few times a week, to once a week.

Deep Cleaning: A lot of people like to use brush cleansers for deep cleaning, but I don’t think they do the job right.  I prefer to use baby shampoo, like Johnson and Johnson’s.  If it’s good enough to clean babies, then it is good enough to clean my brushes!  Deep cleaning can be done as often as every other week or once a month.  This method can take quite some time if you have a lot of brushes (or a lot of product left in your brushes), however it will make your brushes feel brand new.

Basic Cleaning Method: Here are step by step instructions on how to properly deep clean your brushes:

  • Turn the faucet on and adjust it so that the water feels lukewarm.  Then hold your brush vertically with the hair bundle pointing down.  Wet the hair bundle.
  • Pour a pea sized amount of baby shampoo into the palm of your hand (a little does go a long way).
  • Gently massage the hair bundle into the shampoo in a circular motion.  You will see that the color from the brush will transform onto the palm of your hand.  Don’t worry it washes right off!  If you have a lot of product built up into your brush then you can use your finger tips to gently work the shampoo into the hairs.  Make sure you aren’t using a heavy hand and that you aren’t distorting any of the hairs.
  • Rinse the brush; try not to get the ferrule wet.  You should see the color coming out of the brush.
  • If you think you need to wash your brush again, by all means please do so.
  • The brush is clean once the water runs clear and you no longer get product on the palm of your hand (without shampoo).

Remember: You want to always hold the brush vertically whether you’re rinsing or washing.

Lastly: Lay the brushes FLAT to dry!  This will prevent any water from making it’s way into the ferrule and eventually to the handle.  You may leave your brushes to dry over night, but I’ve noticed that some will dry after sitting for a few hours.

Enjoy! Your brushes will feel brand new after a deep clean….and we all love the feeling of new brushes!

Create your own MAC FIX+

Love MAC makeup, but hate the prices? Me too! Recently I’ve heard a lot about their FIX+ spray…if you haven’t heard about the uses for it here is a quick list:

  • to set your makeup (just a light spray over your powder foundation can help reduce the cakey apperance)
  • to use as a refresher spray (on your face or even your hair)
  • to turn your favorite eyeshadow into your new favorite eyeliner
  • to use your eyeshadow wet for a bolder, longer lasting shadow

There’s a ton of different ways to use the FIX+ spray however for $18/bottle it can be pretty pricey. Have no fear! There is a quick and easy way to create your own FIX+ spray for $5 (unless of course you need to purchase a container to put it in then I’ll say less than $10).

Here’s what you need:

  • pure glycerin (I bought 100% pure glycerin you don’t need to, but I’d get somewhere in the 90s range
  • a clean/sanitary bottle to put the product in
  • water (filtered or purified is best)
  • possibly a funnel for easy pouring

All you need to do is add EQUAL parts glycerin and EQUAL parts water. I suggest pouring the two into something that you can stir it up (or shake up) because the glycerin is quite syrupy. Then just pour the mixture into your bottle and voila! You have your own FIX+ spray.

To tell you the truth, I’m not sure what the shelf life is. I’ve had my mixture for probably a month now and I’m still using it. I did use filtered water instead of regular tap water. I say try making small amounts that way you won’t waste the glycerin. I also have my mixture in a little spray bottle so that I can easily spray my brushes. I’ve only used this mixture for my eyeshadows and to make eyeliner because I don’t feel the need to refreshen my face during the day.

**PLEASE NOTE: Not every eyeshadow is meant to be used WET! You will want to check the package or even the product’s website to see if it can be used wet. Eyeshadows that aren’t meant to be used wet can be damaged (they will get a weird shine on them which will result in a difficult time using them dry). Pigments and loose eyeshadows last longer and look more vibrant when using this mixture!  The general rule of thumb is that matte shadows will get ruined when used wet whereas shimmery ones won’t.  You can also split the shadow up (if it is big enough) and use one side wet and one side dry.
